Campus open Tuesday

All three OU campuses will be open Tuesday with final exams proceeding as scheduled, the President's Office announced just shy of 3 p.m. Monday.

Stefan McIntyre/The Daily
A split tree blocks Flood Avenue on Monday afternoon just north Lindsey Street.

Finals which were cancelled Monday are expected to be rescheduled by noon Wednesday, OU officials announced Sunday night.

Bizzell Memorial Library is open and will remain open 24-hours through finals week.

OU press secretary Blake Rambo said OU's decision to hold finals Tuesday is based on forecasters' predictions of improving conditions.

"Of course, should the situation worsen, the university will reevaluate its decision, but as of now weather experts indicate that there will be safe conditions [Tuesday]," Rambo told The Daily.

Campus power is on, although about 200,000 OG&E customers in Central Oklahoma remain without power.

The Daily heard dispatchers Monday around 5:30 p.m. say it may be days before power is restored to parts of Norman.

Calls to the area Red Cross and OG&E were not returned.

City slowed by ice, limbs

With temperatures hovering at or just above 32 degrees, roads in central Norman are not entirely frozen but are obstructed by extensive tree damage and fallen limbs.

But those are the most serious concerns, as Norman Police Capt. Leonard Judy said he has not heard of any injuries in Norman.

"We've got, of course, tree limbs down all over town that have both served to block the streets to a large extent and to take down a lot of power lines," Judy said. "As they restore power to one area, power in another area will go down."

Judy said Norman's Parks and Recreation Department has joined the city's street crews in clearing limbs from roads.

"(They're) just going to push them aside for right now," Judy said. "Later on, as time allows, they will come back, cut them up and remove them.

"People who have fallen trees and limbs in their yards, if they will get those out to the easement or curbside in the next couple days, they will be removed by city employees, and there's no need as with normal yard waste to cut them up and bundle them."

Judy said safety precuations should be obvious, but he emphasized staying away from power lines.

"All downed lines should be considered live wires whether they're sparking or not," Judy said. "People who come across a downed line should stay away from it."

Checking on neighbors

Judy said extensive power outages can be hazardous to some senior citizens.

"If people are aware of senior citizens or others who live near them, they might go ahead and ehck on them if they feel comfortable doing so just to make sure they're alright," Judy said.

so what do you guys think is going to happen? reschedules on saturday or even next week maybee? or reschedules really late at night or early in the morning? or your current grade in the class is the grade you get? What do you think?

A. Mutant - 12/09/07 9:48pm

Does anyone know if the Bizzell library and the Memorial Union will stay open on Monday?

CrimsonQt7 - 12/10/07 10:34am

I believe that students should have the option to take the test at a later time or settle for the grade that they currently have without the final grade. It would not be right for them to tell us we have to take the make-up exam on friday, saturday, or sunday night because of all the students graduating! I think if you are happy with the grade you currently have in the class, you should be allowed to opt out of the final

anon. - 12/10/07 3:45pm

How the heck are they going to have school tomorrow? Yeah its above freezing, but everything else is a mess. Campus corner, Greek Row and most of Norman east of I-35 are without power. Campus is trashed with huge tree limbs laying everywhere. Most roads are blocked from trees falling down. Yet I guess that getting your head bashed in from a falling tree is not important enough to take some test that can just as easily be rescheduled. Oh well, hope everyone is safe tomorrow and watches out for falling limbs.

Concerned Student - 12/10/07 3:48pm

I love that our campus is more concerned about taking finals than the safety of our students. A lot could happen tonight that they are not even taking that into consideration.

Anonymous - 12/10/07 4:05pm

Considering almost every building in Norman is currently without power, I think it is kind of crazy that finals are going to continue. How do they expect people to study when the only place with lighting and heat is Bizzell? I know it's big, but I doubt it can house the entire student body for the week. How are they going to deal with this on Thursday and Friday if the majority of students and other Norman residents still don't have power? It is unresonable to expect students to continue to study for exams when there are other issues such as a lack of hot water and other basic necessities.

Kyle - 12/10/07 4:12pm

It seems a bit ridiculous that campus would be open on Tuesday when you can't even walk from the Library to the Union without going through a jungle or a river. There are 27000 homes in Norman without power, including many student homes and apartment complexes. We are supposed to go days without a shower or heat and still navigate through all the blocked streets and take finals on Tuesday? That seems ludicrous to me.

Anonymous - 12/10/07 4:19pm

I just wish OU would have told us that the Library was open. The message they sent out Sunday night said all of campus was closed. How may students were unable to write papers on limited battery supply or study because they believed the whole campus was closed?

Diana - 12/10/07 4:28pm

The OU policy states the the student can take the final at a rescheduled date (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday) or they can opt to take the final in the Spring, after winter break.

Charlotte - 12/10/07 4:37pm

I think everyone should write to president Boren with your concerns. Honestly, how are we supposed to study when we are more worried about staying warm tonight and having food to eat. My house has a whole in it from a tree, my neighbor's car was smashed by a branch, and there is more freezing rain predicted tonight. Please Email Boren at dboren@ou.edu if you don't have power or heat, this is ridiculous!

sean - 12/10/07 4:43pm

i'm glad that school is open tuesday. the quicker we all get done with finals, the quicker that i can get out of this damn town.

lisa - 12/10/07 4:47pm

yeah it stinks for finals tomorrow for students that can't get there but I'm sure you could arrange something with your professor if you are unable to get out... a lot of students have to take finals tomorrow because of travel plans at the end of the week, or work, etc that pushing finals back another day would ruin those plans. I personally am leaving for France on Wednesday because I will be all done with finals and if tomorrows were postponed I would have to decide between taking my finals or going to France...definately not something anyone would want to do

Anonymous - 12/10/07 4:47pm

I guess I am going to have to scale the fallen power lines just to get out of my apartment so I can take my finals. There's nothing wrong with walking through standing water near downed power lines right?

Anonymous - 12/10/07 4:51pm

I was able to email my professor and she is letting me take my 8am final that I was supposed to have tomorrow later in the week since I live in OKC and we have downed powerlines and tree limbs everywhere. I think its ridiculous that those commuter students are going to have to drive early in the morning just for a stupid final. So what if its above freezing during the day? Roads are just going to refreeze overnight, and making it to early morning finals would be dangerous.

Anonymous - 12/10/07 4:55pm

Close the campus Boren. Be responsible.

Anonymous - 12/10/07 5:51pm

I am severely disappointed with the administrations decision to continue finals Tuesday. I am currently writing this from my cell phone because I have been without power since last night. A fallen tree is on my car and I have no way to get to campus tomorrow. This is absolutely ludacris and I hope that President Boren is aware of the danger he is putting his students in. That was a poor decision on his part, and I am not ashamed to state that I am MORE than unhappy with him.

Anonymous - 12/10/07 6:22pm

Hey in some of my classes I am getting the opportunity to take my finals in January. The university will be placing an "I" on my transcript in these courses. Does anyone know if this will be removed and replaced with an appropriate letter grade after I complete my finals in January?

Anonymous - 12/10/07 6:25pm

Some of us live in OKC and commute. Things here are horrible; no power at my house since midnight last night and downed power lines and tree limbs everywhere. What about those of us who don't have the luxury of walking (or slipping ) across campus to take our tests? This is RIDICULOUS. Postpone them.

Anonymous - 12/10/07 6:33pm

This is so sad, MANY OU students and faculty are without power, yet the Provost is continuing with finals, this is just unsafe. I think each one of the University Vice Presidents should walk down the south oval and pray as they go they aren't hit by a falling tree, which are continuing to fall as we read this.

Jared - 12/10/07 6:40pm

Well, this seems to suit OU's standing record of stupidity within the administration. *sigh*

anon - 12/10/07 6:46pm

The University has a responsibility to its students and their safety and they are obviously showing their lack of concern for the student body. Like many other students I have no power, no heat and am concerned about much greater things than my finals. Check out the really "touching" email that Nancy Mergler sent out - log into hub.ou.edu, go to the message boards, and under "classes" read the responses to "No Classes Tuesday?" Whoever this lovely lady is obviously thinks that blocked roads and power outages are easy to get around. In case everyone else didn't know... this lady just informed us all that ice can't refreeze and everything is going to go away in morning. Thanks for your miracles, Nancy.

Anonymous - 12/10/07 7:10pm

I am shocked by this. I do not look forward to a freezing walk to campus covered by widowmakers (and I'm from Montana!). It sounds like a waterfall outside, with giant trees crashing everywhere!

Anonymous - 12/10/07 7:12pm

Downed trees and power lines all over Norman and more on the way. People may not have power for days in Norman. But yet OU is proceeding with finals. I'm not trying to get out of my finals by any means but when students may be in danger (from fallen trees, power lines, etc) and when some can't even get out of their houses or into their cars, Boren has to take that into consideration. As I write this, I see lightening in the distance and my friend called me to tell me he saw a power line go down on Sims St. just now. Boren needs to close campus tomorrow.

Yes...your life sucks so does mine, get over it. - 12/10/07 7:20pm

so let's all stop complaining and whining for a second and let's think about this. Honestly they can't cancel finals tomorrow. Today already screwed up hundreds of people many who are probably wanting or needing to get home. The point is, if you have a legit excuse like my computer died because I have no power or a tree fell on my car I can't get to school, 9 times out of 10, your teacher will work with you. They are going through this too. More students will be able to make it to campus tomorrow then not. So instead of rescheduling tons of people for a new test time, it is easer to deal with a select group. So grow some balls and stop complaining because we all have to deal with this.

. - 12/10/07 7:35pm

tomorrow should be renamed official punch boren in the face for making us risk our lives to take finals day! obviously he takes himself just a little too seriously.

Trapted in apartment - 12/10/07 7:39pm

Are we really supposed to study by candle light. Most of us have no power or heat. I can't even leave my apartment, the is a tree blocking my door. My power has gone in and out all day. Honestly Davey Boren.......how the hell am I supposed to study, or even get to school. Are you gonna come and move this tree?

Annoyed... - 12/10/07 7:39pm

I understand that the roads will be mainly clear tomorrow and the temperatures will be above freezing but there are so many other dangers that President Boren ignored. I cannot get out of my driveway due to trees that have fallen. I am lucky enough to have power but a lot of my neighbors do not. How are they supposed to study? They're probably preoccupied with fixing holes in windows and roofs as well as finding a way to keep warm. If Norman Public Schools are closed, how come the University isn't? How uncaring.

Blake Stamps - 12/10/07 7:53pm

What is wrong with the administration! Sure, the ice will be less of a problem on tuesday, but what about the THOUSANDS of OU students still without power, unable to study? A poor decision by boren, which should be rectified.

newtonfaulkner - 12/10/07 8:00pm

This is a joke. I don't think half of the student body will get any worthy studying done tonight without any power and the library, one of the only places to study, is insane. Not to mention waking up for an 8am final without electricity and dodging fallen trees will be a blast. I guess you have to hope you can get to campus or i guess you're screwed.

k - 12/10/07 8:15pm

There is a precedent for this situation: in 2000 the Norman campus was closed for a day during December finals due to a sleet storm. Finals were rescheduled for Saturday. I don't see why the same procedure can't be taken here, even if it takes multiple days to reschedule finals.

fgsfds - 12/10/07 8:21pm

It's supposed to rain through the night and tomorrow, and it's supposed to get below freezing again tonight, so all the ice that's melted will just freeze again. Plus how am I going to get to class when my car is below a tree? I haven't been able to get a hold of any of my professors because I just got my power back and now my new concern is how I'm going to get home to Houston at the end of the week. I'm all for postponing finals until the beginning of next semester, it'd make much more sense.

Anonymous - 12/10/07 8:29pm

Seems like nobody consulted legal about the risk involved in holding class tomorrow.

Cody - 12/10/07 8:45pm

I just want to say thank you to our wonderful president and his advisors for putting the students first. I really appreciate the fact that instead of worrying about the downed power lines, lack of heat, and damage done to my house, they have given me finals to take my mind off of those things that are far less important. It's so nice to see a university that has its priorities in line. Instead of worrying about the well-being of its students and faculty, they would rather place an emphasis on students traversing the tree ridden sidewalks while avoiding other trees from falling on their heads.

Anonymous - 12/10/07 9:11pm

Guess who has power? President Boren. In fact to spite us he has left his Christmas lights on. That ain't Right.

JeanCharles - 12/10/07 9:32pm

Are we really expected to take finals when the majority of our homes are without heat, water, internet, and electricity? There are downed power lines across the street from me and my already frozen car is blocked into the parking area by an enormous fallen tree. Just because the roads may not be icy in the morning doesn't mean it is safe or appropriate to go about business as usual. Icy roads are the least of my concerns right now, I can't believe we are expected to take exams in the morning when most of us can't even get our basic necessities filled.

anoyn - 12/10/07 9:33pm

Other schools in the state have the policy that if finals are cancelled due to weather, then the students are given their grade that they have without the final. why can we not adopt this policy? i am still with out power and am trying to concentrate on my 8am final, however i have other concerns that are on my mind with the weather situation. boren should reconsider his decision and close campus tomorrow. at the very least close it for the morning and only have to reschedule morning finals if need be

Anonymous - 12/10/07 9:41pm

This seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen, some student slides down the steps at dale, tree falls on top of someone, even someone getting in a wreck on the way to school. Granted i want to get my final over and done with, but it seems like the University is taking on some unnecessary liability here.

Amelia - 12/10/07 9:44pm

I am just wondering how some people are able to comment to this if they claim to have no power? I realize that some laptops may still have battery life, but one person claimed they lost power yesterday. Come on, my laptop's battery dies pretty quickly.

Annie Humphreys - 12/10/07 10:10pm

OU students want a university president who cares about them and their safety. Most of the actions taken by the administration for our safety have a lot more to do with saving the University's public image. This is great for politics but not in the best interests of the people who are actually walking around the campus every day. In this case I think both marks have been missed. I'm definitely ready to get finals over with but a little concerned about being in a closed room with 80 people who probably haven't showered in at least two days. At least it's flu season.

Anonymous - 12/10/07 10:14pm

Students, staff, faculty, everyone is being put at risk by opening tomorrow. Almost every school district in the state (including Norman) is closed. Over 500,000 people without power according to OG&E. But yet we're still suppose to show up tomorrow?!? Any accidents and injuries tomorrow are on the administrations head. I think I've decided OU is not the place for me.

Lou - 12/10/07 10:26pm

My apartment complex was roped off and blocked off by police this afternoon because of a fallen tree that pulled down all the surrounding power lines. My car, as well as the rest of the complex, cannot get out unless we drive through these branches and the hanging lines... Hmmm.

Eskimo Bob - 12/10/07 10:43pm

Well I would tell everyone to come study in the library but since it is below freezing here that probably isnt a good option. I think we all should just stay at Boren's House until finals are over.

AC - 12/10/07 10:46pm

I wonder if these comments are even read by anyone in the administration, we're probably all just wasting our time. Oh well, I'll add my bit and I sent Boren a nice email =) This is pretty absurd that they expect us to go tomorrow, as it's a warzone outside. I just now managed to find a friends house with power and just am now able to study. My house is completely blocked in by trees and my car is smashed, it's just lovely. Besides those planning on graduating opting for these finals to be moved to the spring semester would be ideal. Some bad accidents are bound to happen tomorrow, I hope the school has fun with the law suits.

Ben - 12/10/07 10:49pm

How am I supposed to write a paper on a 2 hour computer battery? My power has been out for almost 24 hours now. It's tough to do journal research on a telephone.

Kathryn - 12/10/07 11:20pm

Considering the fact that nearly all commuting students are without power, I'm wondering how they are supposed to study for the final exams they're being forced to take tomorrow. Currently my boyfriend is in his apartment studying by candlelight. He can see his breathe indoors because his heater is not working! If OU officials expect students to produce good grades on their finals, they are out of their minds. Furthermore, campus conditions are dangerous. If OU isn't careful, someone will get hit by a falling branch and they'll have a lawsuit on their hands. If they expect to continue with classes, WHY are there no crews working to clear the walkways and make campus safe for students? This is outrageous.

Student - 12/11/07 12:24am

Hey guys look on the bright side, at least Boren has enough power to light his christmas lights.

Anonymous - 12/11/07 1:46am

Living at the 'brary. - 12/11/07 1:49am

I live off campus, but was determined to be overprepared for this and temporarily moved into my sorority house, sleeping in an extra bed. When we lost power at 3 am Monday morning I went back to sleep not knowing what to do. When I woke up Monday morning a friend told me that the library was open and would continue to remain open for 24 hours through the end of the week. I made it to the library by noon. I will be spending the night on a table at the library so that I can get a decent night of rest before taking two finals on Tuesday. I have resorted to sleeping on a wooden table, while Boren snuggles in his warm bed with his Christmas lights beaming, (seriously they're on) as the rest of Norman fights to stay warm and eat.

concerned student - 12/11/07 2:00am

I will say this: I have been here in oklahoma for 2 off the chart tornadoes (yeah, im from moore) and a bombing. I know what a disaster zone looks like. 200,000 oklahomans without power, Trees impaling cars and OG&E won't even return calls. That's a disaster zone. And its game on tomorrow? Finals are a go, go go?? I'm luck to have power, but many of my poor classmates are screwed. I think admin is huffing too much paint.

Anonymous - 12/11/07 2:39am

so I just read that we're in a state of emergency and the Lt. Gov Askins said that oklahomans shouldn't leave their homes unless absolutely necessary... Oh yeah and make sure you study hard tonight instead of trying to keep warm without power or instead of fixing the gaping hole in your house/car. Also when walking to campus don't wear an ipod so you can listen for falling limbs. I'm wearing a hard hat or something...

Cork - 12/11/07 4:05am

This is pretty silly. I'm trying to figure out a way to feed myself and a place to take a shower right now before my 7:30 AM exam, which I don't have any means of waking myself up for without power (which is why I'm sitting in the middle of the Library miserable as hell and half asleep right now). I'm glad that this exam grade is going on my permanent record! Thanks Boren!

Nate Franco - 12/11/07 4:51am

What a bunch of babies! This is the real world and sh*t happens! Yeah, this situation sucks for everyone, but that doesn't mean finals shold keep getting postponed. (If you don't know the material by now, your probably in trouble anyway). If a tree fell on your car, take a cab. Don't linger under large tree branches, stay away from downed power lines, and take your finals! I feel for all of you people whining about taking a little ol' final because of some bad weather! I wonder what you will do when something really tragic happens in your lives. Reading these comments makes me really wonder about this generation. You all are soft and I don't know why!

daniel - 12/11/07 5:13am

i think the university is required to give everyone the option of either taking their final this weekend or taking it during the first week of next semester. some people have non-refundable plane tickets and have family trips planned. im takin mine next semester even though neither of those apply to me.

Lauren Pyle - 12/11/07 5:28am

There are, of course, many concerns with the threats the storm has caused us, but let's forget about the silly one's of not being able to get to campus. We can all find a way. Friends, family, neighbors driving to campus- even if you don't know them that well, at least you're going to the same place, get a taxi cab, whatever. A branch falling is dangerous, however, you can judge whether you should walk under that tree. There are plenty of other routes that don't have trees everywhere. The main concern goes back to the test taking strategies that we all have been doing since we were in grade school- Be Well Rested, Eat a Healthy Breakfast (depending on the time of day), Have GOOD HYGIENE and feel good about taking an exam...what else, you name it.... more than half of the students aren't going to meet the requirements. I haven't had a shower since Saturday morning. That's just disgusting, considering I take showers twice daily if not more. Washing with a rag isn't going to cut it. I know they did it back in the old days, but remember, they weren't going to take an exam that could determine the possibility of grad school, medical school, whatever it may be that is in their future. Not all of the friends we know have electricity, and unlike bumming a ride from a random, it isn't so safe to go get naked in someone's bathroom whom you don't even know. There are places across town that are open in order to feed us, but what about those who don't have the money to afford a restaurant, and when you don't have CrossRoads open on campus, I'm not sure what you expect us to do. What about those who commute from the city? Make special arrangements for them??? BUT forget the 24000 plus in Norman without a source of heat. I'm sorry, but going to school feeling completely unprepared, not because we didn't study early enough- I have a room reserved at the union almost every night- but because we lost over a day of studying due to the lack of light sources, heat, or because we were unable to eat what we did have in the pantry due to no microwave/oven/toaster etc., and most importantly NO showers for a ton of us... Well, that just isn't worth ruining my GPA over. I understand that it will be craziness to try and get exams rescheduled to accomodate everyone's schedule, but there has to be a way to just postpone them until the beginning of next semester, and lengthen the Spring semester a week. Yes, it has been noted when graduation ceremonies are and what not, but it isn't so close that you can't notify everyone of a minor schedule change. This is just ridiculous that we have to sacrifice our future all because of one week of school- due to inclement weather, something we cannot control. If there were no power outages it would be one thing, but if you didn't notice, it kind of affects everything that we do. I spent most of my time today dealing with my animals at home. They're not going to die in a few days due to being cold inside the house, at least they're not in the wind, but how would you like to be kept in a pen, locked up, unable to use the restroom except all over yourself? Remember, not all animals are potty trained and can just go when you say go on your time schedule. What, am I supposed to leave her in the cold outside to get sick? If there was a garage I guess I could put her there, but some of us don't have those. I am not about to let her spoil my carpets. I'd spend more time getting the smell out than studying later in the week when I really needed it. The arguments could go on and on, and we could bring up many other points. The bottom line is that the conditions provided just aren't healthy. Maybe the President's house should try running off of Norman Water and Electricity, and experience what all of us are dealing with. It wouldn't be too exciting to give your presidential speech for a specific area of interest had you not had a decent meal, sleep, or shower. Deodorant only goes so far, and we all know that NOT sleeping in your own bed causes sleeplessness. Any option at this point is going to be much better than taking tests completely unprepared. I am more worried about my grades than anyone at this point in my life, and I can't believe my entire semester is about to be determined from this one exam for each class. That isn't fair, and the issue shouldn't be dropped like a hat. I am completely baffled as to the logic behind this decision.

Sleepy - 12/11/07 6:26am

So, here I am in OKC, getting up at 6 am just so I can make the oh-so-pleasant journey to Norman and take a final. This is so ridiculous...

"Anonymous - 12/10/07 4:55pm Close the campus Boren. Be responsible."

Anonymous - 12/11/07 9:38am

stop whining! you lack discipline!

Ashley - 12/11/07 9:44am

I do not get it!!!! Campus is a disaster! I know my apartment complex doesn't have power and it is all students! How do we study? Or sleep? And why can't we just choose whether we want to take our final or not? UCO's finals are completed cancelled and if a student wants to take the test to make their grade better, they have the option to do so! I just think this is ridiculous!

Joe - 12/11/07 9:58am

Dear God, enough with the whining already. If you have a hole in your house, a tree on your car, or any other calamity that is keeping you from campus, just let your professor know - they will all work with you on this. And for all you anonymous posters, if you're going to complain you can call the President's help line at 325-1212 and stay anonymous, or grow a pair and complain using your own name. Damn.

AJ - 12/11/07 10:28am

Admittedly, it may not have been the best idea to open the campus today, but they're already a day behind. For me, personally, depending on when they reschedule the Monday finals, I may have to call my boss at work and tell him I can't come to work because I have to take final exams that got rescheduled. If they closed campus today as well, then that would possibly hurt my finances even worse. I'm not saying the decision was best for everyone, but it worked for my situation. Fortunately, I live in the dorms and power was still on there. I'd like to see how they fix the situation from closing campus yesterday, where they place the exams at now.

Krishna - 12/11/07 11:05am

If there is one thing that I have learned today, it is simply that the administration gives greater preference for those that choose to live in University Housing (dorms, Kraettli & Traditions). today, hundreds of commuter students are going to have to risk their lives going to school simply because those within University Housing have the capability of doing so. In other words, Boren has ignored the safety of all commuter students, the great majority of the OU Student body, just on the assumption that students who live in Housing will be able to take their finals. Oh, and for those of you that believe that Boren did the right thing, why don't you, Boren and everyone else who thinks he did the right thing try spending sleeping through one night without any power, waking up in the morning in the freezing cold, and try taking a final when your car is literally under a tree!!!! The administration only gives a damn for those who choose to pay more to the university by living in University Housing.

jhackme raw - 12/11/07 11:44am

I agree with the 95% of you who think that school on Tuesday is ludacris. The south oval had been attacked by aliens, I had to leap over all kinds of small rivers (and trudge through some) while being splashed by cars and buses driving down the newly implemented canal. Most of the trees are demolished and debris EVERYWHERE. This all makes finals so much easier!

Shame on OU. I have had no power since sunday and even though i made it to the library to study I will be less prepared for finals than I would be otherwise. There are more important concerns, like where is an out of state student with no electricity going to sleep tonight? Thanks Boren and provost, hope you enjoyed your warm showers this morning.

This is insane! Just cancle finals. Sometimes life throws curveballs that force people to make decisions that are not ideal. The state is in the middle of a federally declared disaster of which there is no immediate end and the only thing on the mind of the administration is how to avoid messing up their schedule. Is cancelling finals ideal? No! But it makes more sense then having half of a class show up to take a final and the other students getting zeros or taking it next semester any way. The administration's has been talking about their concern for student safety for years, but this is obviously a crock. Does this mean that we can ignore all of the other "safety" rules that have been put in place over the past couple of years? I think everyone knows what I am talking about.

I for one would be disappointed if the campus was shut down any more days. I was without power for a day, but that doesn't mean I couldn't study. There are tons of places with power to study, coffee shops, libraries, friend's houses, and many other shelters. I hate how people want to use this as an excuse to get out of having to take a test or to give them a few more days to study. Life is sometimes ruff, and I expect college students are vigor enough to find a way to coup. It only shows how dependent we have gotten on the assumption that life will always be exactly the same one day to another. How taking away something as trivial as electricity nearly stops life.

Blame OGandE and the electric utilities. Why don't they bury the power lines? We do this in all the Northern states and guess what...we rarely, if ever, have power outages. There needs to be an investigation of negligence or potential endangerment of lives. And Boren needs to have a good talking to about our concerns. We should picket in the house, it is OU property after all. That way we can have HEAT!

This is insane. I am pretty sure the tuition we all pay easily handles the fuel necessary for the back up generators you are running for campus power. With that being said, it would be nice if you would be more considerate on this issue and turn the HEAT up in the union and the library. I was taught throughout elementary school, middle school and high school that we should be well prepared for a test (well rested, balanced meal, etc..) Not only did I get none of the above because I live off campus, I was also granted the pleasure of studying in an ice box all yesterday and today(the union). It's definite that food will not go bad here. We should not be put in any kind of test situation, much less our final exam. Hope your bed was warm.

Blame OGE! They cut my power this morning to 'repair' others. 10 hours later, no power!

For any person that becomes ill or is, God forbid, killed due to power outage the power companies should be held liable. They all knew full well from last year and many previous ice storms that the power lines are extremely vulnerable.

I'm ready to get finals over with so that I can have a fun break. I just want to do things like play video games, read books & watch TV - stuff that I can't usually do much of. I don't want to think about classes at all.

To those of you saying to suck it up, are you without power? And how far from campus do you live? My apartment is without power, or heat, and however much you say go study at the library, that place is even more crowded than the usual finals week. Everyone is going there right now, and it is not very conducive to study right now. The inability for this campus to provide for students that live outside its walls is appalling, and I can't wait to finish finals so I can get the hell away from this place.

Re: Logic Whitney How arrogant can we get? I wouldn’t expect someone who actually has heat to understand how it feels to wake up in the morning to a house that is 30 some odd degrees. Fumbling in the pitch dark to dress, eat or even to complete basic tasks related to hygiene is not as simple as you make it seem. Again, I wouldn't expect you to understand as you don't have this problem. As to your claim that students are using this situation as an excuse for more study time, I think you’re insane. If anything the power outages have put us behind. However if that is the case, I direct you to do what your fellow colleagues are doing, as ruff is spelled rough, students have vigor - they are not vigor, and students don't coup they cope. Good luck on finals, you need the extra study time.

I agree that finals should have continued - but I am disappointed that the university did not do more to offer shelter to students without power? Couldn't have they opened up their food courts to students without power - I had a fridge full of groceries - but guess what? After 2.5 days without power, all my groceries are bad. I've had to buy all my meals out - spending more money than I have with my GA salary. I don't have parents paying my bills - I would have liked to see a hot meal and maybe the field house opened up to offer students a warm place to sleep. Busses could have run extra routes to get students to campus. There was a much better solution than the university's.
